AWS CWI FAQs


ACCP Level II Visual Testing certification is available to AWS CWIs and SCWIs through the agreement with ASNT.
This agreement facilitates companies' and individuals' compliance with current and anticipated personnel qualification
requirements for Visual Testing. To read more about the agreement, see the ACCP Level II Certification area on the

1. As a CWI or SCWI, what is the advantage of being certified as an ACCP Level II in Visual and Optical
Testing (VT)?
If you work under codes or specifications that reference the ASNT Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A or
ACCP as a requirement for NDT certification, having the ACCP VT certification will meet that requirement for
VT.
2. What type of ACCP certification can I get as a CWI or SCWI?
If you have a currently valid CWI or SCWI certificate, you can apply for ACCP VT Level II in the General
Industry (GI) Sector in the Direct Testing technique. If you also wish to apply for the Pressure Equipment (PE)
Sector, you will have to document three years experience in the inspection of pressure related equipment. If you
have Remote testing experience, you can also apply for the Remote technique by listing the remote visual
equipment and the types of inspections that you have performed with that equipment.
3. As an SCWI, can I apply for ACCP Level III through this agreement?
No. When the ASNT Certification Management Council reviewed the AWS SCWI examination requirements, they
determined that the ASNT Basic Examination requirement, which tests the candidates for knowledge of other NDT
methods, was not met. As a result, SCWIs cannot get ACCP Professional Level III certification. However,
because an SCWI has met all of the requirements of a CWI, they may apply for the same ACCP Level II
certifications.
4. What will ACCP certification cost me?
The base price is $200.00. The PE and Remote endorsement prices are $25.00 each.
5. If I get ACCP certification now, when will it expire?
Your ACCP certificate will expire on the same date as your current CWI or SCWI certificate. If your CWI
certificate is due to expire in the near future, you may wish to wait until you renew your AWS certification before
you apply for ACCP certification.
6. Will my ACCP be renewed when I renew my CWI or SCWI certification?
While your ACCP certification will expire at the same time as your current CWI or SCWI, it will have to be
renewed separately through ASNT. Because AWS has a 30-day grace period for renewal, ASNT will permit
certificate holders to apply up to 60 days after their AWS expiration date. This will give applicants time to receive
their renewed certificates from AWS and to forward a copy to ASNT with their ACCP renewal application, which
will be available on the ASNT website.
7. What kind of eye examination will I need?

The ACCP program requires Jaeger J-1 near vision acuity, so your AWS eye examination (which requires J-2
acuity) cannot be accepted. When applicants go in for their AWS eye exam, they should ask to be tested to J-1 and
have the eye examiner note on the report form that J-1 acuity has been met. The AWS eye form can be used as
long as the J-1 note is included.
